Custom Web Development Case Study
Building Scalable Digital Solutions Through Modern Application Architecture
Standing up a full-scale ecommerce storefront from the ground up - domain, hosting, and application - built to run in unison with a statewide retail operation.
Project Overview
| Project | Custom Web Development |
| Organization | Hawkeye Fan Shop, The Official Retailer of the University of Iowa Athletics Department |
| Focus | Ecommerce Application Development, Domain & Hosting Setup, Retail Integration |
| Outcome | A full-scale storefront built from scratch and running in unison with retail operations across the state |
The Challenge
This engagement was a true ground-up build, won through a competitive bid to take over from a previous provider. There was no existing site, domain configuration, or hosting to inherit - every piece needed to be established before a single product could go live, all while supporting brick-and-mortar stores and mobile gameday shops across every University of Iowa sport.
Key challenges included:
- No existing domain, hosting, or web application to build from
- A need for a storefront with the full range of capabilities fans expect from their team's official shop
- Retail locations across the state and mobile gameday shops that needed to operate in sync with the online store
- A launch timeline tied to a live sports season, with no flexibility to slip
- A need for an application built to scale as the partnership grew across more sports and stores
The Approach
The build started from the ground floor and worked outward - domain and hosting first, then the application itself, built to run in step with the physical retail business.
- Foundation Setup
-
Established domain registration, DNS, and hosting as the starting point for everything built on top of it.
- Ecommerce Application Development
-
Built a full-scale storefront application with the browsing, cart, and checkout capabilities fans expect from an official team shop.
- Retail Integration
-
Connected the online application to retail store and gameday shop operations so the business could run as one system, not several disconnected pieces.
- Component-Based Architecture
-
Structured the application in reusable, maintainable pieces designed to expand as the partnership added more sports and seasons.
The Solution
A custom-built ecommerce application now runs the storefront end to end, tied directly into retail operations across the state.
| Capability | Impact |
|---|---|
| Full-Scale Storefront | A ground-up ecommerce application with every capability fans expect from their team shop. |
| Connected Retail Operations | Online and in-store business running in unison rather than as separate systems. |
| Scalable Architecture | An application built to expand cleanly as the partnership grew. |
The Results
With a custom-built application running the storefront, store and web performance have improved, gameday traffic has been handled without the site buckling under peak demand, and conversion has trended upward across departments over the course of the partnership.
- A full-scale storefront built and launched from the ground up
- Gameday traffic handled reliably at peak demand
- Upward conversion trends across departments
- A custom application supporting ongoing email campaigns for gameday information, product drops, and student-athlete appearances
Approach & Capabilities
- Custom Application Development
-
A ground-up ecommerce build covering browsing, cart, and checkout functionality.
- Domain & Hosting Setup
-
Foundational infrastructure established before any application code went live.
- Retail Systems Integration
-
Online storefront connected to physical retail and gameday shop operations across the state.
- Scalable Codebase
-
Accessible, maintainable code structured to grow with the partnership over time.
Business Impact
Building an ecommerce application from nothing means every decision - hosting, architecture, integration - shapes how well the business can run years later. Connecting the storefront directly to retail operations meant the online and in-person business could move together instead of pulling in different directions.
Through foundational setup, custom application development, and deep retail integration, this initiative created a storefront that has supported the partnership with Hawkeye Fan Shop and the University of Iowa Athletics Department since 2016.

A storefront built from scratch is only as good as the decisions made on day one. It's built deliberately, from the domain up, so the platform you're running is one you can actually grow with.
